Hi, I’m Eric Naposki.
I want to personally thank you and welcome you to the Fumbled Justice website.
You may be wondering why this site was created. The answer is simple: the truth behind this crime has been kept from the public for far too long.  For years, key figures in this case—including prosecutor Matt Murphy and lead investigator Larry Montgomery—have avoided telling the full story. The reason is straightforward: the truth contradicts the narrative that has been presented all along. If that truth is fully examined, it calls the conviction—and the reputations behind it—into serious question.

The reality is, the truth has never changed. It was the same in 1995 as it is today. Based on my proximity to the crime at the time it occurred, it would have been impossible for me to be the perpetrator. Prosecutors knew this in both 1995 and 1998, when they declined to file charges against me.

Fifteen years later, however, Orange County Deputy District Attorney Matt Murphy made the unprecedented decision to file charges—without any new evidence—against a man with an ironclad alibi. That decision revived a case that had previously been rejected.  Since my conviction, I have continued to speak the truth. Yet no media outlet has allowed that truth to be fully heard. Despite eight television programs, two books, and a magazine article, the same incomplete and misleading narrative continues to be repeated.  That is why this documentary—and this website—exist: to give you access to all of the evidence, and the full truth.

It has also taken this long for Nanette Packard to finally confess to her role in this crime. Along with her confession, newly uncovered exculpatory evidence, and upcoming DNA testing, I am hopeful that I will be able to prove my innocence—and expose the circumstances that have kept me incarcerated for the past seventeen years.

I encourage you to take your time as you go through this site. Read carefully. Review the evidence. Consider the facts for yourself.

I believe that when you do, you will come to the same conclusion: this case is marked by serious inconsistencies, misleading information, and a conviction that does not reflect the truth—while the real perpetrator remained free.

Thank you again for being here.  - Eric

EXCULPATORY EVIDENCE

The documents curated below are pivotal to establishing Eric’s innocence and providing a necessary counter-narrative to a conviction built primarily on circumstantial evidence and hearsay. With the exception of certain court transcripts, many of these records were disallowed during the 2011 trial because they were not formally classified as evidence. Despite their exclusion, these documents remain essential to uncovering the truth regarding the death of Bill McLaughlin.

Angelo MacDonald's letter to Debbie Lloyd in 1995 verifying Eric Naposki's alibi
Nanette Johnston's phone records
Detective Voth's admission to not looking into every suspect after the murder
Andrew Murphy's letter about his corrupt brother Matt Murphy
Juror's request to see letter from Angelo MacDonald to Debbie Lloyd
Detective Voth's memo regarding nightclub manager Mike Tuomisto's intention to testify about paging Eric
1995 Orange County Register article about the murder of Bill McLaughlin and Eric's alibi
